'Boro Beggs For Mercy As Students Impress

UCD AFC defeated Beggsboro AFC 4-2 in the Leinster Senior League Sunday Senior 1A.Beggsboro

UCD AFC bounced back form their recent cup exit to put another three points on the board in the Leinster Senior League Sunday Senior 1A. Beggsboro AFC were the visitors to Belfield and left with nothing following a 4-2 defeat to the free flowing Students.

UCD began the game in impressive fashion controlling possession and attempting to pierce the visiting defence at every opportunity. UCD's first goal came courtesy of a flighted Marc Whelan free kick that was glanced past the advancing keeper by the unfortunate Fran Moran who later left the field with a suspected broken nose.

The second goal came shortly afterwards as UCD again put the pressure on and the visiting defence cracked under the pressure. Ronan Lynagh tormented his opposite number before firing a ball across the face of the goal where Marc Whelan was perfectly placed to take full advantage and push UCD further ahead.

The half time whistle disrupted UCD's momentum and two quick fire Beggsboro goals threatened to ruin what had been a confident UCD performance so far. A simple tap in five minutes after the restart followed by a mix up in the UCD defence left the game finely balanced after only 50 minutes of the match.

UCD steadied themselves and regained their composure before pushing forward and finishing off the game. Dan Lehane was instumental in the revival. Winning the ball on the left hand side and splitting the Beggsboro defence with an through ball that Niall Daly collected and slid under the keeper from a tight angle.

The three points were secured ten minutes later when the dynamic Marc Whelan exchanged passes with Niall Daly which saw him clear of the defence and he finished coolly past the on rushing keeper to brush aside memories of the mid game wobble.
