UCD Plug the Leix

UCD returned to winning ways with a 4-2 win over Leixlip United.lsl

UCD AFC's Leinster Senior League Sunday Senior 1A side bounced back from last week's heavy defeat in the cup to continue their impressive start to the league season. Two goals from the effervescent James Timmons set UCD up for a comfortable 4-2 win against Leixlip United.

UCD settled into their flowing football early and had Leixlip on the back foot from the first whistle. The first goal arrived when Timmons picked up the ball in the middle and fed the ball wide to Brian O'Reilly who set the electric Tyrone McNelis free on the wing, his ball into the box was turned into the back of the net by the hapless home defender.

UCD went two goals ahead when Timmons rolled back the years and burst onto a Niall Daly through ball. Years of experience behind him, Timmons calmly skipped past the keeper and slid the ball into the back of an empty net. UCD notched up a third in similar fashion as Timmons once again ghosted past the defence and finished a McNelis pass smartly.

UCD continued to pour forward and as confidence grew McNelis sprayed a cross field pass to the feet of Eoin Roche. Roche took on the keeper but was forced too wide for a shot, he cut back and chipped him instead, 4-0 at half time.

UCD began to unravel in the second half as Leixlip became more physical and sent a barrage of long balls towards the UCD backline. Leixlip pulled a goal back when sloppy defending from a corner gave the Leixlip an opening which they grabbed and reduced the deficit to 2 goals.

Leixlip grabbed another goal back from a corner when a half cleared ball was returned into the box catching UCD unawares and Leixlip sensed an opportunity to make UCD sweat even further. The final twenty minutes was a clash of long ball football from the home side with UCD attempting to hit them on the break primarily through Brian O'Brolchain and Fran Moran. In the end UCD stood firm and a hard night's work yielded three valuable points.
