UCD AFC swept to a 2-0 win over Kilnamanagh in the Metropolitan Cup.UCD v Kilnamanagh 03 11 13

This first round clash between UCD and their visitors from the fourth tier of Leinster Senior League football had the potential to be heavily wieghted in favour of the Students and so it proved as the home side eased to a two goal win. Briain O'Brolchain and Tristan Dent dealt the hammer blows that put the final nails in the visitor's coffin. It could have been more but for Kilnamanagh's keeper.

UCD began the game in confident fashion as Kilnamanagh gave the home side's back four far too much time on the ball. Not one to miss an opportunity to show off his considerable box of tricks, Brian O'Reilly grabbed the opportunity to show the decision to pass up becoming a full time magician in favour of a full time office job was not a total mistake as he pulled out the metaphorical top hat, tails and wand to dazzle his opponents in the early moments. It was all puff though as O'Reilly's trickery came to nothing.

In fact it was left to the true magicians of the UCD side to break the deadlock when Conor Butler and Michael Whelan combined to send veteran midfielder/spring chicken, James Timmons, through on goal. Timmons, who models his hairstyle on his contemporary, Carlos Valderama, was unlucky to see his effort saved. The rebound fell to the feet of Brian O'Brochain and he finished calmly to break the deadlock.

The second half took on much of the same feel to the first half as UCD dominated but could not find the second goal. In fact, the visitors nearly threw a spanner in the works as a goal mouth scramble could have seen the ball ending up in the back of John Kelly's net. Kelly, perhaps with an eye on the performance of his hero in the Man City goal the previous day, was truly commanding and nipped any danger in the bud.

UCD scored the second goal of the game when bionic man Marc Whelan swung a scintillating ball into the box that Tristan Dent smashed into the back of the net with a bullet header that for a time lead to rumours his ceann was about to be reclassified by the UN's WMD team. UCD saw out the game comfortably and moved confidently into the next round of the Metropolitan Cup.
