UCD got back to winning ways on Sunday and advanced to the next round of the cup with this win.

UCD dominated for most of the game without playing their best but did what they had to do.

The opening goal came midway through 1st half thanks to Niall Daly’s near post header from a Paul Curtain corner.

Stiofan Sexton nearly made it 2-0 with two great efforts but the ‘keeper did well to save them both. Niall Daly hit the bar with a first time effort after a low ball in from Whelan.

UCD gave away one chance in the first half with a ball down the middle between Hugh Davey  and Tristan Dent but the Ratoath centre forward shot wide.

In the 2nd half UCD were mostly on top but UCD goalkeeper Coffey having to save a few long range efforts.

Whelan got the 2nd goal to make it 2-0. A throw in from the right found James Timmons who in turn passed to Whelan and he curled a left footed shot into top left corner.

Sexton made it 3-0 with a tap in on the line after Cormac Suen made a great run from just inside their half. He beat two players and shot, Sexton tapped in the rebound.

Sexton could have had two more goals, he hit the crossbar after a great effort from just inside the box and also shot narrowly wide.

All in all the UCD back four and midfield were on top without having to be at their best and manager Diarmuid McNally will be happy to be back to winning ways and to have kept a clean sheet.

Special mention to Paul Curtain who fractured his leg after a tackle midway through 2nd half. We hope he gets better soon
