Students Fall Short in Cork

Mayfield United FC provided the opposition for UCD AFC in the last 32 of the FAI Umbro Intermediate Cup.Mayfield_v_UCD_04_11_11

UCD AFC's Leinster Senior League Sunday side travelled to Cork on Sunday for their last 32 clash with Mayfield United FC in the last 32 of the FAI Umbro Intermediate Cup. A Brian O'Brolchain goal was not enough to save the Students as they went down 2-1 following a battling performance in less than ideal conditions.

The Students began the game on the back foot and the home side took advantage, pressing up the field and putting UCD under pressure from the start. Mayfield controlled possession for the first ten minutes of the game as UCD appeared to get stuck in the heavy pitch, finding it difficult to move the ball at the pace they are used to.

Mayfield hit the front just after the ten minute mark. The ball was fed up to Mayfield's striker and he was too hot for the UCD defence to handle as he moved into the box and slotted the ball past Conor McGroarty in the UCD goal. The concession of an early goal appeared to settle the Students as they finally took a hold of the game and adapted to the heavy pitch and blustery wind. The first half came to a close with neither side creating anything of worth.

With UCD a goal down the second half began and it was clear that UCD had adopted a do or die approach. With their opponents beginning to tire, UCD's wingmen upped the ante. Eoin Roche and Michael Whelan began to get more joy along the periphery and this nearly put the Students level. Michael Whelan sprung forward on the right hand side and sent a curling ball across the box. Brian O'Brolchain stretched to meet it but could only divert it over the crossbar when it seemed UCD were about to draw level.

With twenty minutes left in the game UCD changed tact, they brought on Marc Whelan in place of the tiring Sean Buckley and changed formation to 442 as Michael Whelan moved up front. Almost immediately UCD found themselves 2-0 down. A quickly taken free kick, saw a number of passes exchanged around the UCD box before the Mayfield winger lay the ball across the face of the UCD goal and leaving the striker with the simplest of tasks to find the back of the net.

UCD reacted to this setback with the introduction of David Campion and Ronan Lynagh in an attempt to claw back the two goal deficit with the minutes ticking away. The pressure increased on the home side as UCD won several corner kicks and eventually found the net. Kieran Harte headed a ball back across the goal and Brian O'Brolchain was there to head home from 5 yards.

With their tails up UCD had one last chance to grab an equaliser. Campion found himself in space following a lay off from James Timmons but Campion's right foot finish did not have enough to beat the keeper and UCD were knocked out of the Intermediate Cup.

They will look to pick themselves up as the league campaign swings back into action on Friday night with an away trip to Sacred Heart.
