Drog Had A Mare As UCD Top Town

UCD AFC moved further up the LSL League with another convincing win.UCD_v_Drogheda_Town_13_11_11

UCD AFC's impressive momentum in the Leinster Senior League Sunday Senior1 Division continued apace with another three points. This time it was Drogheda Town who were put to the sword. UCD swapped a goal for each point gained as Tyrone McNelis started the scoring and Stiofain Sexton finished off Town with a brace.

UCD began the game well, looking solid at the back and moving forward with ease. Eric Barber in the UCD goal was settling getting to grips with the higher standard and so breathed confidence through the team. UCD looked to build form the back from the first whistle with Hugh Davey intent on waving his magic wand, in his left boot. Eoin Roche and Tyrone McNelis were bombing forward at every opportunity and had their tracks blocked on a couple of occasions when it looked like UCD were about to create a goalscoring chance.

The breakthrough came in the 20th minute of the first half when Hugh Davey sent a 50 yard ball from left back to the feet of McNelis on the opposite wing. McNelis' first touch took him past the full back, he skipped inside the centre half and was left with the simple task of beating the keeper. He did with consumate ease and UCD were 1-0 to the good.

UCD looked likely to run away with the game as midfield dynamo James Timmons just failed to collect a through ball that would have put him in on goal. Michael Whelan then cracked a 30 yard effort against the crossbar but credit to Drogheda, they did not drop their efforts and pulled themselves into the game towards the end of the first half. A scrappy end to the half saw Drogheda Town fail to take advantage of several well placed free kicks.

The second half began in unfortunate circumstances as the game was delayed for a long period as the visiting centre half suffered an awful knee injury and had to be taken to hospital. The game restarted and it was clear that both teams were struggling to refind their rhythm.

UCD pushed further ahead with 20 minutes left in the game. UCD's attacking threesome, Timmons, McNelis and Sexton were all involved as UCD created a wonder goal. A perfect switch across the box by McNelis was cushioned by Timmons into the path of Sexton, who took the ball first time and smashed it into the bottom corner.

The game was over as a contest moments later when Sexton latched onto a long ball out from the back and produced a wonder strike on a dropping ball that gave the keeper no chance from 22 yards.

The game ended on a sour note as Hugh Davey's wild side got the better of him and he saw red for an off the ball incident.

It mattered little as UCD saw out the game comfortably and moved up to 4th in the table.
