Whelan Squared Equals Another 3 Points

Michael and Marc Whelan continued their scoring form to send UCD top.lsl

UCD AFC regained top spot in the Leinster Senior League Sunday Senior 1A Division with a 2-0 win over Pegasus last night. Goals from Michael and Marc Whelan gave UCD all three points and strengthened their title challenge even further.

UCD were forced to ring the changes as Sean Coffey came in for Conor McGroarty, who aimed to prove he is as successful in an exam hall as he is between the posts. Steve Dillon was replaced by Jack Doyle at the heart of the UCD defence. Dillon was serving the second game of his suspension for interesting use of four letter words.

The game started off tense as both sides looked to give nothing away. It settled into a midfield battle early on and neither side created any real chances. UCD began to get some joy down the wings with Marc Whelan and Tyrone McNelis linking up well with lone striker Niall Daly. Daly's industry was key to UCD's last vicotry over Pegasus and he was keen to keep his energy levels as high as possible.

The breakthrough came rather predictably through some neat football on the ground. James Timmons exchanged passes with Michael Whelan who passed the ball on to his namesake Marc. Marc Whelan took on and beat one player before a ruthless challenge stopped him in his tracks. The ball fell to Michael Whelan who finished with aplomb.

UCD saw out the first half with some excellent football being playedd in attack. Jack Doyle was showing no signs of jet lag having spent 4 months on an airplane and Sean Coffey showed he could be as uselful as any aircraft, dominating in the skies.

The second half was a test of UCD's durability. Their ability to play football in an attractive manner has never been doubted, the question was could they keep going for the full 90 minutes as Pegasus looked to increase the pressure. The answer was a resounding yes as The Students held onto the ball for long periods while hounding their opposition when they did get possession.

The game was finished as a contest when James Timmons skipped into the box leaving defenders in his wake before pulling the ball back for the advancing Marc Whelan who placed the ball under the keeper and gave UCD all three points.
