Drumcondra 1 – 2 UCD AFC, LSL Sunday Senior 1
UCD bouced back from a disappointing start to the season with a classy victory over Drumcondra in Morton Stadium, Santry on Friday night.
The students stamped their dominance on the game early on and were the much better team in every department, going close on a number of occasions early on. But as this league has always shown, there are no easy games and Drumcondra were not going down without a fight.
Ronan Lynagh was the first to test the Drumcondra net-minder with a fantastic long range effort which was well saved, while Niall Daly went close with a header and hit the crossbar with a volley before Brian O’Reilly again tested the Drums number 1 with a header. It was all one way traffic but the students failed to convert chances and despite their dominance in possession, they paid the price for some lacklustre finishing just before half time. A cross from the right was not dealt with in the UCD six yard box and the Drums number 9 fortunately bundled a deflected goal-line scramble into the UCD net.
Trailing at the break was a harsh blow to UCD who had really dominated the first half, but they kept to their game plan and the chances kept on coming in the second half. Niall Daly again went close, as did Fran Moran before eventually super sub Stephen Doyle sprung to save the day and break the deadlock.
Doyle was only on the pitch a matter of minutes when he clinically finished with a half-volley from 12 yards out, before coolly sliding a Ronan Lynagh through-ball into the Drums net 2 minutes later to earn the students a deserved 3 points.
UCD saw the game out with some commanding defending and good goalkeeping from UCD’s Sean Coffey. It was a well deserved 3 points for the students, and 3 points more than they had this time last year.
