Cellbridge Over Troubled Student Waters

UCD AFC stumbled to another defeat in the Leinster Senior League Saturday Major 1A division. Celbridge Town were the visitors and left Belfield with all three points as UCD self imploded not for the first time this season.lsl

The game started brightly for UCD as they took the game to their opponents. Michael Whelan and Tyrone McNelis were proving to be a handful for the visitors and it was not long before UCD had their first opportunity on goal. McNelis was pulled down in the box having tormented his opposite number and the referee pointed to the spot. Whelan then stepped up to convert the penalty but it was saved. The referee ordered a retake and Whelan swapped sides and missed again, to make matters worse the rebound was saved.

Celbridge then took a leaf from UCD's book with some exquisite passing and had the finish to match it. Passing through the midfield finally brought the ball to Celbridge's striker who turned and slotted the ball past the diving Sean Coffey.

UCD continued to put the pressure on the visiting team and should have been back in the game but for some wayward finishing and some excellent keeping. UCD finally got themselves level when a through ball managed to break the offside line and Stiofain Sexton lobbed the onrushing keeper.

The second half saw more of the same as UCD again pressed to get back in the game and the offside line operated by the referee and his back four saw UCD's attacks come to nothing.

Celbridge then sprung to life to take all three points. Their second passing move of the game saw the ball fall kindly to a well placed striker who made no mistake.

UCD tried to get back into the game but it wasn't to be as their promotion hopes slipped further away.
