Firhouse Possess the Lucky Clover

UCD AFC went down 2-1 to Firhouse Clover in the Leinster Senior League on Saturday.firhouse_clover

UCD AFC's Saturday Major 1a began 2011 with a record of 7 wins from 9 games, that became 7 from 10 as UCD went down 2-1 in a closely fought contest with Firhouse Clover.

UCD opted to play against the wind and rain in the the first half and gave an expert display in attacking football given the difficult conditions. Jack Lehane and Gary O'Toole picked up the ball in midfield time and again to distribute it with ease and quality. Michael Whelan and Com Daly on the wings gave UCD the necessary bite in attack that had Clover on the back foot for the majority of the first half.

As UCD applied the pressure Clover's defence became more desperate and several corner kicks gave UCD the opportunity to break the deadlock but the attempts on goal were easily thwarted by Firhouse's number 1. When the opening goal did come it was not a thing of beauty. Brian O'Brolchain gained possession in the middle of the field and drove towards the opposition goal. His eventual shot took a wicked deflection and looped over the stranded keeper to put UCD one nil up at half time.

Half time proved to be a blessing in disguise for Firhouse as UCD's momentum was broken by the break and the Students struggled to regain the hold of the game. Firhouse increased their physical aggression and pressed forward at every opportunity. UCD were playing on the break and had the opportunities to increase their lead but a combination of a poor final ball and a fantastic save from the visiting keeper kept the score at 1-0.

Clover brought themselves back into the game when a long ball forward was not dealt with by the UCD defence and the bean pole striker unleashed an unstoppable shot past Barber in the UCD goal.

This strike stunned the Sudents and worse was to follow when the same striker gained possession on the edge of the box, tricked his way inside the penalty area before being challenged with a strong tackle. The referee surprised everyone by pointing to the spot and Clover took a 2-1 lead from the resulting penalty.

Colm Daly smashed a free kick against the crossbar in the closing minutes of the game but it wasn't enough as UCD started 2011 with a loss that the overall performance did not deserve.
