Trinity, Misses Doyle Sneaks in for Opener!

Jack Doyle and Alan Sutton practically rubber stamped UCD's promotion push.Trinity_v_UCD_14_04_12

UCD AFC moved a step closer to promotion from the Leinster Senior League Major 1A division with a 2-0 win over Dublin University. Jack Doyle and Alan Sutton were on the score sheet as the Belfield Students moved within touching distance of promotion.

In a scrappy first half it was difficult to call as Trinity looked to take advantage of a strong wind and UCD endeavoured to hit them on the break. There were few chances in the first period as Trinity stuck to their tried and trusted long ball style. A strong UCD back line were not for moving however and should have gone in 1-0 at half time.

Tyrone McNelis had the ball in the back of the Trinity net but his effort was chalked off as the referee had spotted a foul. It seemed a harsh decision and the scores remained level at the break.

UCD began to grab control of the game as they imposed their passing style on their opposition. With the wind at their backs UCD managed to pin the home side back but still could not find a break through until Jack Doyle decided to take the game into his own hands, or head. A vicious corner into the box had the Trinity side panicking and Doyle appeared to nod the ball home.

UCD were on a high and continued to press but could not find another goal. The longer the search went on the more encouraged Trinity became and spurred on by the opportunity to put a dent in UCD's promotion hopes they threw everything forward. With UCD sitting back and soaking it up, Trinity were hit on the break.

Substitutes Alan Sutton and Philip Byrne was beginning to stretch their opposite numbers.  Byrne was in splendid form and his raking pass set Sutton free, free of the last defender Sutton galloped towards goal and slid the ball past the keeper and into the net. A desperate lunge from the Trinity centre half was probably best kept for the local night spot as it could not prevent UCD securing a 2-0 lead and all three points.
