Pats C Y Students are Dangerous

UCD AFC moved into the next round of the Tom Carroll Cup.St_Pats_CY_v_UCD_25_01_12

UCD AFC took on St Patrick's CY in the second round of the Tom Carroll Cup in Irishtown Stadium. Alan Sutton had given UCD a late lead in normal time but the Students were pegged back to send the game into extra time.

UCD took the game to their opponents from the first whistle, disregarding the home side's impressive league form. St Pats are flying at the top of the Leinster Senior League Major 1A, the same league that UCD lie in third place. Sean Geoghegan was creating plenty of chances for his team mates waving his wand attached to his left foot. Jack Doyle went close when he sent a header just wide of the post from a Geoghegan corner. Alan Sutton then found himself in a goalscoring position thanks to a Thomas O'Brien through ball, but he dragged his shot wide. Sutton and O'Brolchain were causing their challenging defenders all sorts of trouble.

The second half began with the home side looking to wrestle back control of the game. UCD withstood an aerial bombardment as they looked to preserve their clean sheet. Most of UCD's good play was coming down the left hand side of the pitch as Geoghegan looked to assert his dominance. Sutton broke free again but was stopped by the home keeper and the ball bounced free. Geoghegan swung a delicious ball into the box and Saheed Ogunfowora headed the ball goalwards. With a certain goal on the cards a home defender was left with no option but to palm the ball away. He received a straight red card and UCD had a penalty. Thomas O'Brien stepped up and missed the spot kick that would surely have put UCD into the next round.

With the game heading into the final ten minutes UCD were looking to make their extra man count and they did so through Alan Sutton. A swift move developed down the right hand side and eventually the ball was fired across the box. With the ball picking up pace off the artificial surface, Alan Sutton arrived just in time to side foot the ball home. It was no less than UCD deserved but it would not be enough to see them into the hat for the next round.

St Pats threw everything forward and more by luck than design they got the goal that would put them back on level terms. UCD had dealt with everything at the back so far but one mistake let in the home striker and he took advantage of the confusion to slot the ball past Moriarty in the UCD goal. With the score still level going the game went into extra time and then penalties as neither side could grab the upper hand.

With a place in the next round of the cup on the line Robbie Keogh, Tristan Dent, Niall Hanley, Saheed Ogunfowora and Brian O'Brolchain stepped up to test their nerves from 12 yards. Fortunately for UCD all of the Students' penalties were successful as Pats were made to rue their missed penalty.
