Matterson, So Good They Named Him Twice

UCD AFC finished their campaign with a 3-1 win over Whitehall Rangers.lsl

UCD AFC ended their Leinster Senior League Saturday Major 1A campaign the way they started. Three points following a 3-1 win was well deserved but not enough to cover a disappointing season. Defeat in the quarter final of the cup the previous Saturday was quickly forgotten as two goals from Peter Jack Matterson and an own goal were enough to see off the challenge of Whitehall.

UCD began the game with a high tempo and settled into a passing rhythm. The bumpy pitch did not make things easy with each team suffering a few hairy moments early on. UCD had the better of the opening exchanges with the Connolly's on both wings threatening to create chances.

Most of UCD's best play came down the wings but it was a breakdown on the right hand side that eventually let UCD down. Whitehall robbed the ball and moved it quickly into the UCD box where Finnegan was left with no chance.

Again UCD picked up the tempo and continued to drive towards the home defence. Mark Condon had a thunderous effort palmed over the bar on one such occasion. Having gained the lead Whitehall were determined not to give it up easily and the score was 1-0 at half time.

The second half saw UCD come out with another burst of energy and the equalising goal was not long in coming. It was no surprise when it came from the flanks. A vicious Darragh Connolly ball into the box was met with sharp movement from UCD's attacking players, the ball eluded them and bounced in off the hapless Whitehall defender.

UCD's tails were up and they pressed forward in search of another goal. Darragh Connolly found himself on the end of a Sean Geoghegan free kick but his volleyed effort just cleared the crossbar.

UCD took the lead through hard work from Stiofain Sexton and a cool finish from substitute Matterson. Sexton pickied up the ball in midfield and drove at the defence. A slide rule pass to Matterson found him in space and his neat finish put UCD into the lead.

UCD needed to stand firm in the face of an onslaught of long balls and free kicks with John Finnegan excelling between the UCD sticks.

UCD finally put the icing on the cake and saw off Whitehall's challenge when Matterson once again popped up in the right place to head past the keeper. A quick free kick from Philip Bourke, who took time out from practising his Cruyff turns, found Darragh Connolly in space. Connolly's pin point ball into the box was headed past the keeper by Matterson arriving late.

Another season that promised so much and didn't quite deliver as much comes to an end with UCD lying in mid table in the Leinster Senior League Major 1A Division.
