DCU Under UCD's Spell

UCD knocked DCU out of the Liam Dodd Cup.lsl

UCD moved into the next round of the Liam Dodd cup thanks to second half hat trick from Alan Sutton and one each from Darren Muldowney and Thomas O'Brien. DCU provided the opposition and they probably wished they had not made the trip to Belfield as the UCD Students put on an awesome display of attacking football bringing their goals scored for the season close to 70 goals.

UCD began the game at frightening speed tearing into their opponents from the first whistle. Kevin Dunne was influential in the first ten minutes first winning a corner kick and then firing a low cross to the back post where Darren Muldowney was on hand to place the ball past the keeper.

Number two was not long coming. Thomas O'Brien burst into the box and left his opposite number with no option but to bring him down. The referee pointed to the spot and O'Brien fixed his hair, readjusted his snood and fired the penalty into the back of the net.

UCD started the second half 2-0 up and in no mood to let DCU back into the game. Alan Sutton in particular was determined to kill off any chance of an opposition come back. Niall Wright provided Sutton with his first opportunity, swinging an inviting ball into the box which Sutton couldn't help but find the back of the net with.

Sutton's second goal was a great finish that showed the technique needed to finish teams off. His third goal was one for the cameras. A long ball over the top encouraged Sutton to run free, a quick glance towards the first team training pitch to see if Martin Russell was watching and a deft lob later and UCD were home and hosed.

DCU grabbed a consolation goal with a header from a cross out wide but it was not enough to take the shine off a commanding UCD performance.
