The UCD Saturday Premier 1 team returned from the Christmas break last weekend as Booth Road arrived to campus in attempt to knock the students off the top of the table.

UCD got off to a ropy start, conceding in the opening minutes to a precisely crossed free kick which was headed home easily by the Booth Road centre back.

However, the students did not panic and managed to keep much of the ball while at the same time creating many opportunities. Unsurprisingly, the equaliser was found well before the break through Colin Jones who confidently finished into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Soon after Mark Murnaghan came close to giving UCD the lead as he struck the cross bar from 30 yards out. Colin Jones failed to capitalise on the rebound to add to his opening goal. Minutes later Luke Dunne scored with an unstoppable strike into the bottom corner to put the students ahead.

Throughout the second half UCD played much of the same football which gained them their first half lead and it was only a matter of time before they increased their lead.

Frustration began to show among the Booth Road players who started to concede many free kicks in dangerous positions. In the process of this they were perhaps lucky to keep all 11 men on the pitch.

Manager Tony Sheridan decided it was time to rotate the team and his substitutions all managed to make a positive impact on the procedings. Joe Keohane and Daragh Culleton were introduced midway through the second half, both players managed to put the ball in the net, putting UCD 4-1 up.

In the closing minutes Robert McDaid took his chance and scored UCD's fifth and final goal. An impressive 5-1 win for the students brings them three points closer to winning the league and also completed a very positive weekend for the club.

UCD host Kingswood FC this coming Saturday (Jan 26th) in Belfield at 2pm.
