UCD do the Job to Reach Cup Final

UCD's LSL teams reached their second cup final in a matter of days with victory over Jobstown in the Wally Winn Cup.

Wally Winn Cup

In what started as a cracking day ended up also being a cracking game with the students coming out on top with a 2-1 win, with goals scored by Sam Kingston and Adam Carroll.

Jobstown started the brighter and looked the more likely to score in the opening exchanges, and somehow missed an open goal after about 20 minutes, when it would have been easier to score their striker dragged his tap in wide. This chance seemed to spring the students to life and the students began to work their way into the game courtesy of their brilliant midfield trio of Carroll, O'Donnell and Jeffers.

Just as it was looking like it was going to be scoreless at half time, Sam Kingston had other ideas as he refused to give up on a through ball from O'Donnell and the ball broke for him and he calmly headed the ball into the empty net.

The work rate of the UCD midfield trio was exceptional and allowed the students to settle into their usual passing game and relieve some pressure from the back four.

With 20 minutes left on the clock Adam Carroll looked to have sealed it after his 25 yard drive found the bottom corner. However this seemed to spark Jobstown back into life and as they threw everything at the students looking to get back into the game, they were given a lifeline as the referee pointed to the spot after the ball bounced up and hit an outstretched hand. The penalty was calmly slotted away and it was game on!

The UCD back four of Patton, Brett, Moran and Walshe were exceptional throughout and looked to have seen out the remainder of the game but in the 3rd minute of added time the referee pointed to the spot again after a Jobstown player was bundled over inside the box. It was now the turn for the heroics of Bill Phelan as he got down to his right to save the penalty which was soon after followed by the full time whistle.

The win sees UCD progress to another cup final after their Sunday team beat St Pats CY 5-0 last week to progress to the Intermediate Cup Final.
