UCD AFC drew 1-1 with Rathcoole Boys in the Leinster Senior League Sunday Senior 1A Division.rathcoole

UCD AFC continued their recent good progress in the Leinster Senior League Sunday Senior 1A with a hard fought 0-0 draw against Rathcoole in Belfield on Sunday morning.

The first half was the calm before the storm as both sides probed for a breakthrough without causing much damage to either defence. Rathcoole pressured UCD's defence into abandoning their normal free flowing football which in turn put the midfield out of their stride.

Chances were few and far between with frustration beginning to build as the half wore on. Marc Whelan had the best of the few chances but failed to capitalise while Ronan Lynagh terrorised his opposite number on the right hand side.

The second half began in much the same manner as the first but as frustration grew and concentration dropped chances began to appear. Two fantastic last minute interceptions by Steve Dillon and Brian O'Reilly kept UCD in the game as Rathcoole threatened to break the deadlock.

UCD themselves broke into the Rathcoole danger area on several occasions but were thwarted in much the same way. Brian McFlynn saw his header just miss the target and on two separate occasions a goal mouth scramble developed as UCD pressed for the go ahead goal. The scrappy nature of the game resulted in several yellow cards being issued.

As the game wore on it was clear that one goal was going to be enough and Brian O'Reilly again put his body on the line to ensure it was not a goal that would cost UCD. His blood covered skull testament to UCD's willingness to put themselves on the line.

Conor McGroarty, ignoring constant transfer speculation, maintained his concentration in the dying embers of the game to pull off an acrobatic save to ensure another point on the board for the Boys in Blue.
