UCD regain Collingwood!

UCD regained the Collingwood Cup they last held in 2007 with a narrow 1-0 win over NUIG in the final on Friday. A goal from former Shamrock Rovers forward Robbie Creevy sealed victory - a 25-yard chip which ducked just under the bar and which was the Galway side's only goal against from play in the whole tournament. NUIG had a penalty appeal turned down on the hour, but were reduced to ten men five minutes from the end, and Dave McMillan nearly put the issue beyond doubt shortly afterwards when another lob went just inches over the bar. However, the one goal was enough, and the Collingwood Cup is coming back home! UCD - C. Burke; O'Reilly (Doyle 30), Keaveney, Leahy, Lehane; Roche (Geoghegan 82), Dineen, Creevy, McMahon; D McMillian, Wilson (Whelan 76). Subs not used - P. Burke, O'Toole, McFlynn, McGroarty

UCD into Collingwood final

UCD have reached today's Collingwood Cup Final after victories over UL and holders UUJ. Goals from Eóin Roche and Robbie Creevy were enough to see off UL 2-1 in Wednesday's quarter final, with UL's goal an 84th minute penalty consolation. UUJ, who beat UCD in last year's final, were then put to the sword yesterday, albeit in a thrilling match which had to be decided on penalties. Eóin Roche put UCD ahead on 86 minutes - his third goal in as many games in the tournament - but UUJ were level two minutes later to force extra time. Remarkably, UCD again took the lead with four minutes to go through John Dineen only for UUJ again to equalise within two minutes. UCD's penalty takers - Dave McMillan, Robbie Cheevy, Eóin Roche and Mick Leahy - were all successful, with keeper Cian Byrne saving twice from UUJ to see UCD through 4-2. In today's final, the Students will take on NUIG, who defeated Trinity College in the other semi.

Harding disappointment for UCD

UCD failed to make an impression at the 2009 Harding Cup, losing to NUIG in the First Round before being eliminated in the Plate play-offs. Ger Chivers scored the only goal of the game for NUIG in the competition opener. NUIG ultimately went on to reach the semis, where they lost to UL after extra time. UCD went into a Plate play-off against Mary Immaculate College and DCU. A 1-0 win against MI - a John Dineen penalty - and a 1-1 draw against DCU meant a two-goal win would be enough for DCU to progress at UCD's expense. They duly won 3-0, ending UCD's hopes for another year. UCD squad - 1: Cian Byrne, 2: Joe Holt, 3: Daniel Lenane, 4: John Dineen, 5: Garreth Mathews, 6: Colm Bailey, 7: Graham Risk, 8: Brian McFlynn, 9: Evan Connelly, 10: Peter McMahon, 11: Gavin Falconer, 12: Jeff O’Flynn, 13: Aidan Lawlor, 14: Paul Bourke, 15: David Fitzgerald, 16: Cormac Wilson, 17: Ruairi Roderston, 18: James Brennan

Harding Cup draw made

The draw for the 2009 Harding Cup has been made, with UCD facing NUI Galway in the first round on Thursday. The winners will face UCC on Friday in the last eight, with the semi-finals and the finals of the Plate and the Cup competitions taking place on Saturday and Sunday. Nine colleges are entered in this year's tournament, which takes place on the UL campus. UCD won the competition in 2005, 2006 and 2007, but were knocked out by DCU last year.
