UCD started their defence of the Collingwood Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Royal College Of Surgeons in Trinity Sports Grounds. Goals from Paul Corry and Cormac O'Brolcahin gave the Belfield Students enough to see them progress to the next round where they meet Ulster University Coleraine

UCD began the game with an extremely high tempo which pressed College of Surgeons back into their own half. The Boys in Blue struggled however to make an early breakthrough as the linesman's flag and poor final ball intervened at the pivotal moment.

Robbie Creevy found himself in space in the Surgeons' box following a delightful Mark Langtry cross. Creevy swivelled as the ball came in but could not keep his volley down. David O'Connor had to leave the field following a concussion as UCD showed they could combine their flowing football with agression in the tackle when needs must.

The teams were level at half time and as the second half began to open up the Belfield Studens' fitness began to tell as Surgeons' could not keep up with UCD's ability to swtich the play quickly. The opportunities began to arrive but still UCD could not take advantage. Creevy again found himself in a good position but slid his effort wide of the advancing keeper and the goal. Cormac O'Brolchain was next to raise the pulses. He somehow managed to send his header over the bar when positioned practically on the goal line. A rare talent.

Brian O'Brolchain was then introduced up front as UCD switched to a 442 formation. O'Brolchain was instrumental in UCD gaining the go ahead goal. His shot was saved expertly by one of the Surgeons' players. Unfortunately for the palyer involved he was not the goalkeeper and a penalty was awarded. Paul Corry steppedB_OBrolchain up and slotted the ball past the designated keeper to give UCD a deserved lead.

UCD continued to miss chances until Cormac O'Brolchain ventured forward for another corner to show that playing in an environment of learning suits him. This time he arrived just on time to bullet a header into the back of the net and put memories of his earlier miss well behind him.
