Pele Sports teamed up with Dublin County Council to launch their "Street Striker Challenge" last Thursday night in Dublin's Basin Lane. Special guests on the evening were UCD AFC's Mick Leahy and Luke Fitzgibbon. Having earned themselves an impressive reputation in the Airtricity League it was time to see if they could mix it with Dublin's best street talent.

By means of the Pelé Sports Street Soccer Challenge, 12-17 year old boys and girls in the disadvantaged areas of our major cities will have the chance to show off their street football skills and become ‘king of their street’. Before becoming 3 time world champion, FIFA Player of the Century and football ‘King of the World’, Pelé started playing football on the streets of Brazil, coming from such humble beginnings that meant he had to play barefoot for much of his childhood. The purpose of this program is to truly ‘give back’ to the game and to the kids on the street who have the same dream that Pelé had when he was young. The children will also get to meet some local football stars from both the League of Ireland and the Cork and Dublin GAA football teams. Everyone who takes part will receive a free Pelé Sports tee-shirt, with the overall winners getting kitted out from head-to-toe in the very latest and coolest football gear the brand has to offer.

Former UCD AFC coach and current Senior Sports Development Officer with Dublin City County Council Aaron Callaghan said, “We are delighted to be involved with this project because it helps us in our mission to show the young people of the City an alternative to drug and alcohol misuse and other anti-social behaviour, by getting them involved in sport. And who better for us to partner with but the King of Football himself.”
