Drogheda United v UCD, FAI Cup 3rd Round

drogsUCD travel to Drogheda for their 3rd round FAI Cup tie in good spirits after Saturday’s outstanding win over Artricity League leaders Dundalk. They have already beaten the Drogs three times this season, twice in the League and also in the Leinster Senior Cup and have yet to concede a goal against them. But manager Martin Russell is clear that he expects Friday’s encounter to be anything but a formality.

“Look how Drogheda rallied last week to keep Pats off the top of the table with a victory the pundits didn’t predict,” says Martin. “They’re at home, they’ve had a lift with last week’s win, the crowd will get behind them and it’s the FAI Cup. We’re on a good roll but we’ll be leaving nothing to chance in our preparations.”

With the return of central defender Andy Boyle from international duty with the Under 19 International squad in Ukraine, Russell hopes to be a full strength. The only doubt is midfielder Paul Corry who has a dead leg.

UCD 3-1 Dundalk FC

dundalkIf, as the old cliché has it, you are only as good as your last game, this UCD team is entitled to morning after optimism. Last night’s comprehensive victory over a Dundalk side topping the table on merit was achieved in a manner which surely satisfied manager Martin Russell’s credo that success should stem from playing the beautiful game. In consequence, spectacle as well as statistics was well served.
