Galway United vs UCD

Don’t look for Andy Boyle on Facebook. The 19year old UCD player does his talking on the pitch. But Boyle, ever present at the heart of the Students’ defence for the first thirteen Airtricity Premier games this season, will be missing for the trip to Galway on Friday.

Boyle will be in Ukraine with the Irish Under 19 International squad competing in the elite stage of the UEFA championship.

“It’s great for the player,” enthuses his manager Martin Russell, “He’s taken the huge leap from the First Division into the Premier completely in his stride to become recognised as one of the best young defenders in the domestic game. It’s an honour for the club too.”

Boyle’s absence seems likely to give a starting opportunity for Michael Leahy, who has impressed when coming on as a substitute, but Russell has several options including switching Brian Shortall back to a central defensive role and bringing the exciting Ciaran Nagle back into his accustomed left back position.

Martin Russell’s only injury doubt concerns forward David McMillan who is due to have a groin strain assessed later in the week. He will be able to count on the services of midfielder Greg Bolger who played for the Under 23 International side against the full international development squad on Tuesday.
