UCD bounced back after defeat by FC Carlow to beat Cobh Ramblers 1-0 in the UCD Bowl.
UCD AFC ran out deserved 1-0 winners over a strong physical Cobh Ramblers side. Michael Whelan, making his first start for the A Championship side, scored the decisive goal after a mix up in the Cob Ramblers defence. Robbie Creevy's initial through ball caused confusion in the Cobh back line and Whelan was on hand to round the keeper and score on his debut.
It was UCD's first outing since losing 2-1 to FC Carlow the previous week and from the first whistle it was clear they were determined to make up for last week's poor result. Dominating possession from the outset Cobh struggled to come to terms with the speed and quickness of thought of the Belfield Students.
Stephen Roche was proving a handful as his surging runs from midfield left the Cobh midfield and defense wondering who should pick him up. One such occasion lead to UCD having the ball in the back of the net again but it was ruled out for offside.
Cobh Ramblers regrouped at half time and brought UCD's dominance to an end but could not breach the UCD goal as Ger Barron pulled off several fine saves to ensure UCD's clean sheet remained intact.
It was a first start for Mark Condon and Michael Whelan from UCD AFC's Leinster Senior League squad and Crag Sargeant came off the bench with 6 minutes left to make his first start in UCD colours since 2006.
