Stephen Doyle twice got on the scoresheet to put Dundalk to the sword.Stephen_Doyle_2

UCD AFC made the trip to Oriel Park on Monday evening for the latest round of fixtures in the A Championship. The Students were looking to put their shock 4-3 loss to Sligo Rovers behind them and strengthen their position at the top of the league table. Two Stephen Doyle efforts sandwiched a Mark Langtry goal to give UCD all three points.

UCD made a flying start to the first half and were 2 goals to the good before Dundalk had the chance to threaten Mark McGinley in the UCD goal. Stephen Doyle was first up to put the ball in the home net. His 25 yard shot gave the keeper no chance.

Mark Langtry was in flying form on the left wing and terrorised the opposition right back from the off. The Dundalk keeper found himself cluthing at fresh air as Langtry made full use of the space afforded to him. A vicious left foot cross flew over the keeper and into the top corned and UCD had a comfortable lead.

The game settled into an end to end battle as Dundalk looked to claw their way back into the game. Danny Fallon burst into the box from midfield but his effort went just wide of the post. Mark Langtry then put free kick off target as Dundalk grew in confidence.

Killing off the game early was clearly in UCD's mind as they pressed forward at every opportunity. This approach caught UCD out just before the break. A UCD attack was cut short and Dundalk pounced on the opportunity to move down the field. A shot from the left hand side was heading into McGinley's grasp til fate intervened and a cruel deflection saw the ball end up in the back of the UCD net.

The second half saw both sides drawn into a midfield battle with chances being created at both ends. Dundalk drew first blood in the second half grabbing an equaliser after 5 minutes. Clever movement from Dundalk's number 9 created some space and fed with the ball he made no mistake under the advancing McGinley.

With both sides level the three points were up for grabs again and as the half progressed the game became more tense. Dundalk had several tight offside calls against them and at the other end Stephen Doyle sent a shot into the side netting.

It was Doyle who settled the tie in the end with an impressive finish under the keeper. Ian Fitzgibbon won the ball in midfield and quickly fed it to UCD's goal hungry striker. Doyle collected the ball and finished smartly from the edge of the box.

5 Stephen Doyle goals in 5 A Championship games has gone a long way to ensuring UCD's flying start to the A Championship season continues.
