A Championship 2011: Fanad United 0-3 UCD AFC

UCD AFC made the arduous trip north to Fanad United on Saturday evening in the latest round of fixtures in the 2011 A Championship. It was their second outing against Donegal opposition and it produced another win. Two goals from Sean Russell and a tap in from Samir Belhout made the long trip back home that little bit more berable.

UCD began the game brightly and settled into their passing rhythm quickly. Sean Russell and Stephen Doyle were getting some joy down the wings but the Fanad rearguard was standing firm. Fanad were keen to show their abilities in front of goal too, but were scuppered on each occasion by UCD's back four and McGinley in goal.

A tight first half needed a moment of brilliance from Stephen Doyle to break the deadlock. Enjoying a lot of possession down the right hand side swung a perfect ball into the box that was not fully dealt with by the home defence. Sean Russell capitalised and finished smartly into the bottom corner.

UCD began the second half like they did the first with good possession out wide. This time it was the full backs, Brian Connaughton and Kevin Dempsey who took the leading roles. Charging forward at every opportunity, The Students, supperior fitness was beginning to tell.

Danny's Ledwith and Fallon in midfield continued to probe the Fanad defence with clever balls that set up further chances for Belhout and Doyle but the lead remained at one goal.

The Students did not have long to wait to extend their lead as Sean Russell doubled his tally for the game. His first effort from a free kick was blocked and his second flew past the wall and keeper to give UCD a deserved 2-0 lead.

With the home team beginning to tire and UCD appearing to get stronger as the game wore on Belhout took full advantage to press home UCD's dominance. A square ball across the goal left Samir Belhout with the simplest of finishes. Stephen Doyle's late penalty claim was waved away and UCD had to content themselves with a 3-0 win away from home.
