William O’Connor appointed Assistant Manager

UCD AFC are delighted to announce the appointment of William O'Connor as our new first team assistant manager.Willie OConnor

Donegal native O'Connor, a teacher in Balbriggan Community School spent five years as first team coach under Ollie Horgan at Finn Harps before taking charge of the Shelbourne under 19 side in last season's truncated season.

He has also been heavily involved with the FAI Schools international side and made a winning debut as head coach in their last fixture played since the Covid-19 crisis struck that was against Australia Schools at Whitehall in January 2020 where they claimed a 2-1 victory.

O'Connor has just completed his UEFA Pro Licence. While he enjoyed his most recent role at Shelbourne the opportunity presented to join our first team set up was too attractive to refuse.

"The set up at Shels was first class and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there working alongside people like Ian Morris, Alan Reynolds. Alan Caffrey and Damien Duff has been a great learning experience for me and I will only ever be able to say good things about the club.

"However, having spoken to people within the game and weighed everything up, the chance to get back into senior football at UCD was something I couldn't refuse.

"I'm looking forward to working at Belfield. The facilities are top class and I'll be working under a good manager in Andy Myler and hopefully we can go on now and continue with the excellent form the team has already been showing in the early part of the season."

Speaking after the confirmation of the appointment, Andy Myler, was delighted with the appointment, and also wished Ian Ryan all the best with his new role with Wexford.

"Obviously we were sad to see Ian go but we completely understand and support him in his first step into management. Ian has been a brilliant coach and member of our group as well as an amazing support personally.

It's great though that we've been able to replace Ian with someone of the calibre of Willie. His football knowledge, coaching ability and experience with Finn harps, managing the Irish schools team and his time with Shelbourne marked him out as someone we were keen to have in our group. He's already settled in well and is a member already of our northwest mafia!"

O'Connor has a few familiar faces at Belfield with Carndonagh man Sam Todd, a former Finn Harps centre back starring for the students. While three other players from O'Connor's last game with the FAI Schools international side, Eoin Farrell, Adam Lennon and Adam Verdon are now part of the UCD first team squad.

O'Connor will take the position immediately, and after meeting the squad at training this week, he will be on the bench for Friday night's First Division tie against Shelbourne at Tolka Park. Kick off is 7.45pm and you can watch it live on LOI TV.
