Match Preview: UCD vs Athlone

Kick-off: 7.45pm, Friday 1st April, UCD BowlSSE-Airtricity-League

After returning from Cobh last week with a hard fought 2 – 0 victory against Cobh Ramblers, we are back at the UCD Bowl for this week's SSE Airtricity First Division game against Athlone Town.

Two goals from Georgie Kelly and a clean sheet inspired the victory in Cobh, and Collie O'Neill was pleased with his side's performance and is hoping for more of the same this week against Athlone Town.

"We played a lot better last week than we have been and moved the ball a lot quicker. It's also great to see that not only can we play nice football at times we can also roll our sleeves up and dig in when we have to. Georgie (Kelly) and Swanny (Ryan Swan) linked up very well and created a number of good chances between them. It was also great to have Brian Shortall back after suspension and he did very well. Hopefully now over the next few weeks we will be able to push on and gain some momentum starting with Athlone on Friday."

Last season saw a number of tight games against Athlone Town, with two draws in Athlone and a win a piece here at the UCD Bowl in the four league games played between the sides. Going into the game Collie will be looking to ensure there is no repeat of last season when we conceded five of Athlone's six goals in the last 10 minutes of the various games.

Ahead of Friday night's game, Jason Byrne (calf), Samir Belhout (knee) and Ryan McLaughlin (hamstring) will all continue to miss out through injury. There are no suspensions for the game however.
